Handmade Paper made from Hawaiian wauke, hapu`u ferns, and tī plant fibers! Each sheet is one-of-a-kind with printed banana stamps. Just like the spider, I’m moving on from this web to create another. As I had cut the cordages from their anchors, I couldn’t help but think about how quickly my sadness came and went. The first cut was painful and stressful, I started to feel uncomfortable in my body. Then, I was absentmindedly cutting away until the last cordage from the ceiling, my book drooping solemnly hanging by its last thread. “This is me right now” i thought. Hanging onto the very last attachments of what i called reality. But I’ve been telling myself that something needs to change, my vocabulary needs to change, my priorities needs to change because there should be more to life than suffering for a place to live, suffering in the anxiety of unguaranteed safety, suffering in the game of capitalism. Im in the midst of rewiring my brain. I cut that last tendril, and my book fell on the floor so beautifully. It just surrendered. No more tension, no more spreading itself so wide and thin. I let go.

I’m pau! Mahalo nui! After a year of my fellowship, I’m overjoyed by the amount of support I received throughout my creative process. The spider is contemplating its next endeavors, at least until next Friday! Ill be bringing more bananas and share a free demonstration of banana fibers on Holualoa’s First Friday🕸️

No Place Like Home by Angaea Cuna…I think of what an indigenous library might look like. Instead of books on shelf, rather than square but oblong? Or long twisted? Reimagining library and information through the native lenses is harder than I thought. Accessing that aged and fossilized wisdom, and somehow the ones that burned into ash as well, seems to be a tangled burrowed root system. Where does it start! Where does it end? If native nations were not entrapped in a colonized constitution, I wonder how they would have developed a library, or the notion of a book, or a sanctuary for the generational wisdom. How would it evolve into book design? What materials will they use? Will it involve the same steps as western binding and the same attitude of preservation? How much will it be oral and how powerful is the contingency of story through voice and memory?
