Children's drawings are currently the focus of interest in several fields. To examine their artistic abilities, we employed the analysis of pattern. Specifically, this study tested the hypothesis that children (4-10 years old) would demonstrate a consistent pattern of development in art. We assessed the drawings produced in response to a specific picture prompt (drawing what you see) in a sample of children that varied in age (4-10 years) and in artistic talent (i.e., were selected by a trained rater based on the evaluations of their artwork). The evaluation of drawings (as well as of the spontaneous drawings produced immediately after exposure to the picture prompt) was based on the evaluation of two measures of the analysis of pattern: (a) fragmentation (number of fragments per drawing) and (b) overall complexity (ratio of the number of elements to the number of squares in the drawing). A repeated-measures design (between-participants factors: age and artistic talent) was used to test the hypothesis. Findings indicated that the two age groups displayed a similar pattern of development in both the spontaneous and analytic dimensions of art. However, the two groups of children differed significantly from one another with respect to the two measures of the analysis of pattern. Specifically, children of the older age group had a lower number of elements per drawing, but a higher complexity. This pattern suggests that the cognitive capacity to analyze and describe complexity can be reached as early as 6 years of age. Moreover
